Why Malta Should Not Accept Warships?

Moviment Graffitti has been campaigning against warships since 1997 for the following reasons:

  • Warships, participate in wars which leave thousands of innocent civilians dead. The death of civilians for the acquisition of resources, as has been the last war in Iraq, can never be justified.

  • Some of these wars, such as the last war in Iraq, are not authorized by the United Nations security council – resolution 1411 of UN security council was vetoed. This means that, according to the Nuremburg Principles, warships used in such war are participating in crimes against peace. There are serious speculations whether or not such warships are responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

  • The constant visit of warships is a threat to Malta's security. Warships and other military equipment are a target for militants who harbour anti-western sentiments. Warships are a target for such militants, an example is the suicide bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen in October 2000.

  • Warships undermine Malta’s neutrality. "Malta is a neutral state actively pursuing peace.. " (Par.3 Section 1 Constitution of Malta). Repairing and supplying warships which participate in wars, especially those sanctioned by the international community, goes against the neutrality of the Maltese state.

  • Repairing warships in Malta makes our country an accomplice in wars. President G.W. Bush used Malta’s strategic position for Operation Iraqi Freedom. Before and after Iraq’s invasion Malta supplied the US’s sixth fleet. After the Iraqi bombings President G. W. Bush send a letter thanking the Maltese president for allowing it’s sixth fleet to enter Malta.

  • In schools we are thought to resolve conflicts through dialogue. Warships cannot be used for dialogue since they use force.

  • Deterrence is not a policy that should be used for a peaceful world. War advocates argue that warships deter other countries from invading. History teaches us that it is evident that deterrence does not deter extremists or totalitarian regimes.
