Sharlon Pace took over public land on Manoel Island for his padel business, building on top of important archaeological remains.
Last Thursday, the Planning Authority granted him a permit, effectively sanctioning this illegal development.
On Friday 24 July, we will gather at the entrance to Manoel Island, in front of the padel courts, to protest against this obscenity.
We’ll start gathering at 6pm, and the protest will begin at 6.30pm with a walk through Manoel Island.
The Prime Minister’s promise was clear: Manoel Island would be returned to the people. Sharlon Pace is not “the people.”
We demand that the Prime Minister honour his promise and ensure that any plans for Manoel Island are developed through a holistic approach that safeguards the common good.
We have always insisted that Gżira United FC should be given a football ground, as has been promised for decades. However, the land now occupied by the padel courts forms part of the site that we, as the public, paid €43 million to bring back into public ownership.
See you on Friday. We firmly believe that people have the power to stand up to the bullies who seek to enrich themselves at the expense of our public land.
