DESCRIPTION:Join us on the 8th of March in our fight for solidarity\, liberation\, and equality. This International Women’s Day we are marching the streets of Valletta to raise our voices and demand dignity and justice for all women\, non-binary\, and trans folk. \nThe first Women’s March in 1909 grew out of the labour movement as women marched for shorter working hours\, better pay and the right to vote. While International Women’s Day celebrates how far women’s rights and gender equality have come\, it is critical to highlight the erasure of women’s rights across the world\, as well as the effects of gender violence and abuse. \nIn the past years\, women around the globe\, including in Iran\, Palestine\, Afghanistan and Sudan\, have been fighting for their rights amongst war and violence. 1 out of 3 women in the EU aged 18-74 have experienced physical or sexual violence. And women in Malta are still denied their reproductive autonomy due to the criminalisation of abortion. \nWomen face struggles every day\, which is why this year our theme is “Women’s day every day”. \nWhilst women continue to fight for what they deserve\, we will keep advocating for policies and legislations that help women\, we will keep calling out sexist and abusive behaviour\, and we will not stop being loud until every woman is free. \nThe Women’s March will start at Triton Fountain in Floriana at 15:00 and will finish at St. George’s square with speeches\, and live music. \nLet’s voice our anger against the injustices that we face on a daily basis. \nLet’s march together as one voice\, as sisters united in our struggle for change. \n****** \nIngħaqdu magħna fit-8 ta’ Marzu fil-ġlieda tagħna għas-solidarjetà\, il-libertà u l-ugwaljanza. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday 20th November for the screening of this beautiful 2023 film C’è Ancora Domani\, by Paola Cortellesi which is being co-organised by Moviment Graffitti in collaboration with the Department of Gender and Sexualities of the University of Malta. \nThe film will start at 6.00 p.m. at Moviment Graffitti’s premises (67 Strait Street\, Valletta). \nThe story takes place in post war Rome\, in May 1946. Italian families are struggling with the afterwar poverty\, the country is waiting to choose between remaining a monarchy or becoming a republic and to vote for the election of the Constituent Assembly. Women are voting for the very first time. In this movie\, we follow the everyday life of Delia\, a working-class woman\, mother of three children and wife of Ivano. Her life is not easy .Between many jobs to earn some money\, she faces the physical and verbal abuse of her husband and strives to give her daughter a better future. The movie shows a reality that seems far away from us\, but as we all know systemic violence against women is still present in many different shapes. \nThis activity is being organised to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women which falls on the 25th November. The Screening will be followed by an open discussion introduced by Professor Marceline Naudi. \nThe event is free of charge.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Solstice FemiFest at the seashore of Manoel Island. \nWe will be having an afternoon and evening together! \nHere is the programme for the day: \n\n3-5pm: safe space gathering\, swimming\, chilling\n5-6:30pm: Community Reading Circle. Short poems\, quotes\, powerful sentences will be shared with the participants\, who will read them in turn and also have space for comments\, impressions\, thoughts.\n7-8:30pm: Tombla Femminista. A proper Bingo with a feminist touch.\n8:30pm onwards: Music and socialising.\n\n  \nYou’re welcome to join for the whole FemiFest or drop in for your preferred activities! You can also simply join for the community beach day without taking part in any of the activities. \nPlease note that Manoel Island shore can be reached after a short 10-minute walk and the gate is open to enter only until 8.00 pm\, while you can leave at anytime. Also there are no shops at the seashore. Make sure to bring with you the drinks and snacks that you would wish to find there. \nWe will create an area for sharing food and drinks throughout the event. \nCome and experience an afternoon filled with a sense of community\, empowerment and inclusion; a space where you can express yourself without judgement\, and have fun! \nThis is a safe space activity: women\, non-binary and trans people are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an open discussion on the state of women’s health in Malta\, their struggles and the presence of sexist attitudes in the medical sectors. \nWe will meet on the 27th of May\, the eve of the International Day of Action for Women’s Health\, at 67\, Strait Street\, Valletta at 6:30pm. \nThe discussion will begin with informative presentations focusing on endometriosis\, delivered by Dr Angelika Biernacka Buttigieg and PhD researcher Martina Haber. Afterwards\, the public is invited to share personal experiences related to endometriosis or other women’s health issues. Attendees are also welcome to ask questions\, express impressions or concerns\, and share ideas for overcoming the limitations of the current medical system. \nEntrance is free. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a community discussion on the anti-gender movement\, led by Maïté de Haan\, Belgian policy officer for the LGBTQI+ rights advocacy organization Çavaria. \nThe rise of the anti-gender movement has significant implications for LGBTQI+ rights\, women’s rights\, and sexual and reproductive rights. What exactly is this movement? Why does it exist? Who are the key actors\, and how do they work to influence society? \nIn this event we’ll examine their strategies\, motivations\, and the broader impacts of their activities. Together\, we’ll explore how we can work collectively to protect and advance gender equality and human rights in the face of these challenges. Maïté’s presentation will be followed by a discussion and a moment to share food\, drinks\, and conversations. \nWe’re meeting Thursday 22nd of May at 6:30 pm\, 67 Strait Street\, Valletta (Moviment Graffitti premises). \nMaïté (they/them) is a philosopher and policy officer in Belgium for Çavaria\, the LGBTQI+ rights advocacy organization. They work on a project titled “Gender Coalition.” This project is funded by the Institute for Equality between Women and Men in Belgium.

This year’s title underlines how women from different social backgrounds\, economic conditions\, and diverse countries share the same struggles. \nOur focus this year is on reproductive justice – the right to not have children\, the right to have children\, and the right to parent children in safe\, healthy\, and sustainable environments. We know that contraception is not accessible enough\, abortion is criminalised\, people with conditions like endometriosis lack care\, and not everyone can afford period products. \nFor people who want to have children – is there enough support? Are people financially stable to be able to have and raise children? Pollution\, over-construction\, lack of green spaces – all of this relates to reproductive justice. \nBeyond reproductive justice\, we cannot ignore women’s everyday reality – facing sexism\, harassment\, stalking\, rape\, verbal and physical violence\, misogynistic comments\, an unjust pay gap and unfair sharing of parenting and housework. Sometimes these are very obvious\, sometimes they are more subtle\, which makes it harder to denounce and address these issues. \nWe must also continue to remember the femicides committed in Malta over the past years. We call for those in power to create meaningful change\, and work towards societal transformation. \nWe – women\, non-binary people\, trans people\, and allies – can use our voices to fight together against gender oppression\, on a symbolic day like Women’s Day\, as well as every day\, everywhere\, for every woman. \nWe will meet at Triton Fountain in Floriana\, walk through Valletta\, and gather in St. George’s Square to have speeches\, songs by the Re-sisters Choir\, and a community dance performance by Fran Zammit\, supported by the Department of Dance Studies at the University of Malta.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for another screening leading up to International Women’s Day on the 8th of March. \n‘Sisters’ is a 2023 documentary directed by Marianna Fumai. It explores the challenges that people in Malta\, Italy\, and Poland face when trying to access abortions. The documentary also highlights the solidarity shown by national and international groups\, who work together to ensure self-determination and access to reproductive rights. \nMarianna Fumai is an author\, film editor\, and director. She is also an educator\, an intersectional feminist\, and a reproductive rights activist. She visited Malta in 2019 to meet with abortion rights activists and to witness the first Safe Abortion Day Rally. \nAfter the screening\, the director will be online with us for some questions about the documentary. Moviment Graffitti\, along with MGRM and YPB\, are organizing a demonstration in front of the Law Courts on Sunday 24th at 3:30pm as resistance to this violence that women face every day\, and to empower women to take a stand against our culture of violence. \nWe are protesting the pervasive culture of violence that is normalised\, in Malta and worldwide\, – the visible and the violence behind closed doors\, the violence concealed behind jokes and the femicides we hear about far too late. For all the women who have been made fun of\, catcalled\, harassed\, and killed. \nBe part of the fight against gender-based violence\, which affects mostly women and girls\, but also non-binary and trans people. You are encouraged to bring your placards and energy against this patriarchal violence.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 2024 Abortion Rights Rally on Saturday\, September 28th. \nThe event will begin with a march from Castille Square in Valletta\, at 5pm. After marching through Valletta\, we will gather at La Vallette Square. \nThis year\, in celebration of the fifth anniversary of our inaugural rally in 2019\, we are honoured to welcome two renowned international activists. Joining us will be Ailbhe Smyth\, the esteemed academic who spearheaded the campaign for abortion rights in Ireland\, and Rebecca Gomperts\, a pioneering doctor from the Netherlands and founder of Women on Waves and Women on Web. We are also excited to host a group of activists from Czechia\, known as Ciocia Czesia. As in previous years\, the event will feature inspiring speakers\, music\, and a selection of merchandise\, including t-shirts and tote bags. \nThis year’s theme is ‘Action not Words’. \nPoliticians\, including the Prime Minister\, have been mentioning the need for a discussion on abortion. So far\, these have not translated into any action. Meanwhile\, the hundreds of women in Malta who have abortions every year continue to live in fear\, under a law that condemns them. It is time to move to concrete action that shows that the state truly believes in women’s rights. \nAs the Voice for Choice coalition\, we understand that the cultural and religious values that shape our society make the discussion on abortion a sensitive one. This day is about remembering their struggles and achievements\, while being aware of what there is still to be done for us to be able live in a society where all people can collaborate together to overcome gender stereotypes\, gender-based violence\, femicide\, rape culture\, unfair sharing of parenting and housework\, male privilege in many spheres of daily life\, sexism and sexist language\, wage gaps\, inadequate reproductive services and rights\, and the list is endless. \nWomen\, non-binary and trans people all around the world still feel deeply passionate about this symbolic day\, as well as all allies in the struggle for a society free from patriarchal domination. Hence this year we have chosen the title United for Collective Liberation to underline the need to join forces for change. We are also looking for a change that will liberate women from oppression and injustice. Small amendments and improvements towards justice are essential but our aim is to see a much more radical\, global change in relationships and institutions. \nWe will be marching with anger and frustration\, remembering all the sisters we have lost in the past years and their families that are still waiting for justice. We believe it is important to name Sion\, Bernice\, Paulina and the last woman who was killed by the hands of someone who was supposed to love her\, Sandra Ramirez. \nJoin us on Friday\, 8th March at 5.30 pm near the Triton Fountain in Floriana where we will start our protest march. \nCome and bring other women\, non-binary friends and allies. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of creativity as part of our events around this year’s Women’s Day. \nYou can bring an old tote bag and transform it into a feminist one with fabric markers and paints\, or even stick/sew a piece of material on top of unwanted adverts/words on your tote bag. Francesca Zammit from YPB will bring her sewing machine to help us out with creativity. You may also bring an old T-shirt/other fabric and we will transform them into a tote bag during the workshop. \nWe will also have some ready-made tote bags waiting to be transformed into creative and colourful pieces of feminist art. \nThe workshop will last about 2 hours. Mai Masri. \nAs part of our lead up for Women’s Day 2024 we are raising awareness on the conditions of Palestinian women within the Israeli occupation’s prison system. The film follows our protagonist\, Layal\, a Palestinian school teacher hailing from Nablus in the occupied West Bank. Layal and her husband are prepared to make their way to Canada\, when Layal is apprehended by the Israeli military at a checkpoint. The film follows the events following her arrest and sentencing. \nEntrance is free\, and snacks and drinks will be available. We hope to see you there!

DESCRIPTION:25th November is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Moviment Graffitti\, together with Young Progressive Beings\, is organising a protest march and action as a form of resistance to the culture of violence that characterises our patriarchal society. \nA culture of violence is one which normalises\, justifies and therefore creates a context where violence can flourish in all its forms. Violence against women can be domestic\, physical\, sexual\, social\, moral\, psychological\, economic\, political\, religious\, financial you name it\, women have been subjected to it. We live in a society where violence against women is often concealed behind jokes\, unwanted comments full of sexual connotations (often disguised as compliments)\, and other stereotyped behaviour. \n\nOn Sunday 26th November\, we will be meeting near the Triton Fountain at 11.00 a.m. to march in protest against this culture of violence and to empower women to resist violence in all its forms. Join us. Be part of the fight against gender-based violence\, which affects mostly women. You can bring your own placards or use ours.

DESCRIPTION:In October 1947\, women in Malta could vote for the first time. \nMaltese women did not take to the streets to fight for the vote but it was still a huge struggle\, fought in the corridors of power and on the media\, until their right as equal citizens was recognised by a male dominated political system. Such important events of her-story are often neglected and perhaps not given the importance they deserve. \nToday\, 76 years later\, women’s political representation in Malta still remains relatively low. Women have still not managed to make significant inroads in the local political sphere. We will be discussing the part of her-story related to women’s suffrage in Malta with Professor Carmen Sammut who has published research in this area. \nProfessor Sammut will give a short presentation on the topic followed by a community discussion. \nWe invite you to join us for a glass of wine and to participate in the conversation on Monday\, 23rd October at 6.30 p.m. \nEntrance is free.

There\, we will have speeches\, performances\, merchandise\, and more! \n This year’s theme is ‘abortion stigma.’ \n Each year\, hundreds of people in Malta have abortions. In fact\, we all know and love people who have had abortions. Abortion is common. Abortion is normal. \n But abortion is also criminalised. Just a few months ago\, a woman was prosecuted for having an abortion in Malta. Reported to the police by her abusive partner\, the State helped perpetuate the cycle of violence. \n People who have abortions should not be judged or criminalised. All residents of Malta deserve to be treated with respect and to have the autonomy to decide what is best for ourselves\, our bodies\, our lives. \n The Voice for Choice coalition\, made up of 14 organisations and groups\, will continue to fight until abortion is decriminalised\, normalised\, destigmatised\, and made available and accessible locally. \nJoin us!
