Din se tikkonsisti fil-preżentazzjoni tad-dokumentarju Burning Bikinis u diskussjoni warajh. \n Jum il-Mara jfakkar il-ġlidiet kollha li nisa minn madwar id-dinja esperjenzaw matul perjodi differenti fl-istorja. In-nisa ġġieldu għall-ugwaljanza biex itejbu l-ħajja tagħhom u jiksbu l-libertà u r-rispett li jixirqilhom. Aħna qegħdin nisħqu għall-implimentazzjoni ta’ strateġiji li jġibu bidla sistemika u fit-tul. \n Għalkemm fl-aħħar seklu saru tibdiliet legali li ġabu bidla fil-ħajja soċjali u privata tan-nisa f’Malta\, fadlilna triq twila biex inkunu meħlusin mill-imġiba patrijarkali. Ta’ kuljum\, tfajliet u nisa għadhom jiġu ffastidjati. Lingwaġġ sessist u miżoġenu għadu jintuża liberament fil-ħajja ta’ kuljum f’forma ta’ ċajt kif ukoll fir-riklami\, fil-midja u fuq in-netwerks soċjali. \n Sfortunatament\, Malta fl-aħħar snin\, kienet xhieda ta’ ħafna każijiet ta’ vjolenza domestika u wkoll\, numru kbir ta’ femiċidji (meta mara jew tfajla tinqatel minn raġel għax hi mara). L-aħħar każ kien propju is-sena l-oħra meta Chantelle Chetcuti\, mara ta’ 34 sena nqatlet brutalment mill-eks sieħeb tagħha. \n Qegħdin nistiednu lin-nisa kollha\, u lil dawk kollha li jappoġġjaw il-ġlieda għall-ġustizzja soċjali\, biex jiġu jingħaqdu magħna. Aħna lkoll differenti imma kollha qegħdin naffaċċjaw l-istess ġlidiet ikkawżati minn soċjetà sessista. We are demanding strategies to be implemented to sustain long term\, systemic change. \n In the past century\, many changes have happened both legally and in the social and private lives of women in Malta. Yet\, we still cannot consider our society to be free from patriarchal attitudes and behaviours. Girls and women are harassed on several occasions in their daily lives. Sexist and misogynist language and messages are widely used in the form of friendly ambiguous jokes\, as well as in advertisements\, in the media and on social networks. \n Dramatically\, Malta has witnessed several cases of domestic violence and a number of femicides (women killed by their partner\, their ex-partner or a relative) in the past years\, the last case\, just last year\, being that of 34-year old Chantelle Chetcuti\, who was brutally murdered by her ex-partner. \n We invite all women and all those who want to raise their voice against gender inequality and sexism to join us online on Monday 8th March. DESCRIPTION:Open Mic to Commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. \n The 25th of November is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Although the elimination of violence against women\, unfortunately\, remains a dream\, we will continue fighting towards that end. \n One of the activities we are organising to mark the day is an open mic with the theme – There’s Power in her Words – on Friday\, 26th November at Maori Club in Valletta\, starting at 8.00 p.m. \n We invite women to come and share their powerful words with us on the day to help us raise awareness about this and other issues which women are still facing in this patriarchal society. Women may read their own words or the words of others\, they may read poetry\, parts from a book\, short stories or even sing. Reading and singing in any language are welcome. The movie narrates different phases and ages of Gloria Steinem’s life. Gloria Marie Steinem is a feminist journalist and political activist\, especially prominent in the feminist movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s. \n Doors open at 5:30pm. The movie starts at 6pm. Drinks\, nibbles\, and music afterwards.

SUMMARY:Maternity\, Paternity\, and Parental Leave in Malta - Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Maternity\, paternity and parental leave in Malta: Where are we and where do we want to go? \nMoviment Graffitti is organising a panel discussion about the current situation regarding maternity\, paternity and parental leave. What are they at the moment? Are they adequate? What are the difficulties faced by parents with newborns and young children? What is the situation in other EU countries? What could be implemented to improve the current situation? We feel that the issue of family caring is not being discussed and explored enough. The aim of this panel discussion is to start sharing insights and challenges around family care and leave in Malta from an intersectional perspective. \nWe would also be exploring specific difficulties faced by the migrant community and third-country national parents living in Malta. \nIn addition\, EU countries are committed to implement some new work-life adjustments\, including longer and paid paternity leave and paid parental leave. An EU directive on parental leave has been issued in August 2019 and all countries are obliged to transpose this to national law until August 2022. So why is the Maltese government dragging its feet and why hasn’t it even started discussing this directive with the public? \nIn this event\, we will be screening a short clip from the midwifery team at Positive Birth Malta. The panel discussion will be in person. Lawyer Carla Camilleri from aditus Foundation\, Dr Anna Borg from the Centre for Labour Studies\, University of Malta\, and Karen Buttigieg from the National Parents Society for Persons with Disability\, will be speaking in the panel discussion.

In his reply\, Dr Ellul disagreed with all our points but said the Government intends to build on measures such as these to improve quality of life. We ask that he put words to action sooner rather than later. Wasal iż-żmien li jittieħdu l-passi meħtieġa biex il-vjolenza domestika tiġi indirizzata bis-serjetà u bla dewmien. \n Ingħaqdu magħna quddiem il-Kwartieri tal-Pulizija fil-Furjana biex nitolbu li l-vjolenza kontra n-nisa tinqered darba għal dejjem. \n****** \n This Friday\, 25th November\, is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. \n It takes place just days after another woman was brutally murdered\, allegedly by her former partner\, outside her workplace. \n This Friday\, we are meeting outside the Police Headquarters in Floriana\, walk towards Triton Fountain\, then through Republic Street and finish in front of the Law Courts. \n We’re meeting outside the Police Headquarters in Floriana\, since Bernice Cassar was just here\, two weeks ago\, filing another police report after her former husband threatened her for the umpteenth time. She also filed a report about her aggressor’s threats last Monday. \n The next day\, Bernice was shot outside her workplace and her former husband is the only suspect in the case. \n Bernice Cassar was shot after filing multiple reports for police protection. A court case regarding her estranged husband holding a knife to her throat was scheduled to start a year from now\, because of large court workloads and court delays. \nThis Friday\, we are meeting to ask the authorities to take responsibility for this gross failure. \n Every delay in court procedure kills women. It’s time to ensure that domestic violence is acted upon properly and swiftly. \n Join us outside the Police HQ in Floriana to ask for violence against women to be eliminated once and for all.

SUMMARY:Fit-Triq Bla Biza' - Reclaim the Night
DESCRIPTION: Every year\, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women\, we come together to raise awareness on the violence which women experience in its many physical\, sexual and psychological forms. \n This violence encompasses street harassment\, cyber harassment\, psychological abuse\, unwanted sexual advances\, rape\, femicide\, human trafficking\, child marriage and female genital mutilation. Stopping this violence starts by (but doesn’t stop at) listening to and believing women. \n This year we are marching to Reclaim the Night (Fit-Triq bla Biża’). This is the first such march being held in Malta. We will be marching to show resistance and demand our right to move safely in public spaces\, no matter the time\, the place and what we are wearing. \n We will gather on Friday 2nd December at the LOVE Monument in St. Julian’s at 18.30\, and then march together along the front. DESCRIPTION:On Monday 19th December\, at some point in the afternoon\, a vote will be held in Parliament on the second reading of Bill 28 – a new law that will allow termination of dangerous pregnancies that put women’s lives or health at grave risk. It is essential that this vote passes so that Bill 28 continues on its way to become law. \nAt 3pm we will be giving a press conference in front of Parliament together with other NGOs of the Voice for Choice coalition. We will also remain in front of Parliament until the vote is taken\, to encourage MPs to vote in favour of this essential law that protects the lives and health of women. \nAlthough this is not a rally because the time of the vote is inconvenient to many people\, those who can make it to Valletta at that time can join us as we mark this important milestone in Malta’s women’s rights history.

Ejjew nixorbu tazza nbid flimkien u naraw dan il-ġawhra ta’ film li ma jistax ħlief jispirana. \n****** \n As part of the run-up to International Women’s Day 2023\, Moviment Graffitti will be screening the film Suffragette on Friday 3rd March at 6.30 p.m. at its premises at 67\, Strait Street\, Valletta. \n Set in early 20th century England\, Suffragette is a 2015 film inspired by true events where a group of women\, instigated by the activism of Emmeline Pankhurst\, organised themselves politically to fight for social justice\, equality and especially the right to vote. The story of the British Suffragettes was a fight against injustice as much as it was against the forces of justice themselves. They resisted as much as their fight was resisted by the patriarchal structures of the time. \n Before the film\, Professor Carmen Sammut\, academic\, will give a brief historical and sociological background about women’s struggle for universal suffrage in Malta in 1947 from a feminist perspective. \n Entrance is free of charge. DESCRIPTION: Wednesday\, 8th March is International Women’s Day 2023. Women’s day has a long history of women protesting against injustices and fighting for change as well as remembering their struggles and achievements. This year we will once again be marching in protest against the injustices of our incompetent and insensitive systems and the inequality which women continue to experience in our patriarchal society. \n This year the theme we have chosen is Women United against Injustice (Nisa Magħqudin għax mill-Ġustizzja Mċaħħdin). This theme has been chosen because of the many injustices that women in our society face every day especially when they seek justice through our institutions. Over the past months alone\, we have seen senseless sentences and court decisions\, long years of waiting for action to be taken or for justice to be served\, police inaction which could have prevented serious crimes such as domestic violence and femicide\, lack of information\, lack of coordination\, as well as instances of baseless victim blaming. Women experience injustice not only because of inequality and discrimination but also because our justice system is a farce. \n Join us on Wednesday\, 8th March at 5.30 pm near the Triton Fountain in Floriana where we will start our protest march to voice our anger at these institutions which are supposed to protect us and to demand that our voices be heard and justice served. The march will end in front of the law courts where we will shout our demands. \n Come and bring other women. SUMMARY:Documentary Screening - The Janes
DESCRIPTION: For the occasion of International Safe Abortion Day\, join us for a screening of ‘The Janes’ followed by brief talks and a group discussion! \n The 2022 documentary tells the true story of members of the Jane Collective\, a group of women who performed abortions in the US from 1968 until abortion was legalised in 1973 through Roe v. Wade. The documentary features interviews with several members of the collective. (Roe v. Wade was in effect until 2022\, when it was overturned). \n After the screening\, we will turn our attention to the local context. \n We will first have 2 brief talks by Prof Isabel Stabile and Dr Natalie Psaila from Doctors for Choice\, who will talk about the local Family Planning Advisory Service (FPAS Malta)\, which provides information on reproductive health\, and the Abortion Doula Support Service\, which provides information and support specifically on abortion. Next\, Liza Caruana-Finkel\, a helpline volunteer with Abortion Support Network\, will talk about the organisation’s work in helping people across Europe (including Malta) access abortions through information and financial assistance. \n Afterwards\, we will open up to a group discussion on abortion in relation to Malta. The march will start at 4pm\, so please arrive before then. After walking through Valletta\, we will gather in front of the law courts. There\, we will have speeches\, performances\, merchandise\, and more! \n This year’s theme is ‘abortion stigma.’ \n Each year\, hundreds of people in Malta have abortions. In fact\, we all know and love people who have had abortions. Abortion is common. Abortion is normal. \n But abortion is also criminalised. Just a few months ago\, a woman was prosecuted for having an abortion in Malta. Reported to the police by her abusive partner\, the State helped perpetuate the cycle of violence. \n People who have abortions should not be judged or criminalised. All residents of Malta deserve to be treated with respect and to have the autonomy to decide what is best for ourselves\, our bodies\, our lives. \n The Voice for Choice coalition\, made up of 14 organisations and groups\, will continue to fight until abortion is decriminalised\, normalised\, destigmatised\, and made available and accessible locally. \nJoin us!

SUMMARY:Her-Story: Women's Suffrage in Malta
DESCRIPTION:In October 1947\, women in Malta could vote for the first time. \nMaltese women did not take to the streets to fight for the vote but it was still a huge struggle\, fought in the corridors of power and on the media\, until their right as equal citizens was recognised by a male dominated political system. Such important events of her-story are often neglected and perhaps not given the importance they deserve. \nToday\, 76 years later\, women’s political representation in Malta still remains relatively low. Women have still not managed to make significant inroads in the local political sphere. We will be discussing the part of her-story related to women’s suffrage in Malta with Professor Carmen Sammut who has published research in this area. \nProfessor Sammut will give a short presentation on the topic followed by a community discussion. \nWe invite you to join us for a glass of wine and to participate in the conversation on Monday\, 23rd October at 6.30 p.m. \nEntrance is free.

DESCRIPTION:25th November is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Moviment Graffitti\, together with Young Progressive Beings\, is organising a protest march and action as a form of resistance to the culture of violence that characterises our patriarchal society. \nA culture of violence is one which normalises\, justifies and therefore creates a context where violence can flourish in all its forms. Violence against women can be domestic\, physical\, sexual\, social\, moral\, psychological\, economic\, political\, religious\, financial you name it\, women have been subjected to it. We live in a society where violence against women is often concealed behind jokes\, unwanted comments full of sexual connotations (often disguised as compliments)\, and other stereotyped behaviour. \n\nOn Sunday 26th November\, we will be meeting near the Triton Fountain at 11.00 a.m. to march in protest against this culture of violence and to empower women to resist violence in all its forms. Join us. Be part of the fight against gender-based violence\, which affects mostly women. You can bring your own placards or use ours.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for another edition of Ċine-Palestina where we will be screening the film 3000 Nights (2015)\, dir. Mai Masri. \nAs part of our lead up for Women’s Day 2024 we are raising awareness on the conditions of Palestinian women within the Israeli occupation’s prison system. The film follows our protagonist\, Layal\, a Palestinian school teacher hailing from Nablus in the occupied West Bank. Layal and her husband are prepared to make their way to Canada\, when Layal is apprehended by the Israeli military at a checkpoint. The film follows the events following her arrest and sentencing. \nEntrance is free\, and snacks and drinks will be available. We hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Women's Day - Tote Bags Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of creativity as part of our events around this year’s Women’s Day. \nYou can bring an old tote bag and transform it into a feminist one with fabric markers and paints\, or even stick/sew a piece of material on top of unwanted adverts/words on your tote bag. Francesca Zammit from YPB will bring her sewing machine to help us out with creativity. You may also bring an old T-shirt/other fabric and we will transform them into a tote bag during the workshop. \nWe will also have some ready-made tote bags waiting to be transformed into creative and colourful pieces of feminist art. \nThe workshop will last about 2 hours. Throughout it we will also be able to chat\, have a drink and chill. \nThis is a safe space activity: women\, non-binary & trans people\, queers and allies are welcome. We have a right to ask people to leave if they are making others feel unsafe.
