SUMMARY:Massive Xlendi Development - PA Hearing
DESCRIPTION:The decision on the application for the demolition and excavation of a site which will eventually be developed into a 13-storey four-star hotel towering over Xlendi bay will be taken on Tuesday 26th January at 10.00 am. \nWe are encouraging the public to attend this meeting in order to voice its opposition to this project. \n TO ATTEND THE MEETING REGISTER FROM HERE: https://bit.ly/361JrwC \n Despite public outrage at this application\, with hundreds of residents\, together with the Local Council and Gozitan organisations\, voicing their objections to this development\, the case officer has recommended it for approval. Should permission be granted for phase 1 of the development\, which foresees the demolition and excavation of the site\, the site will be committed for development. This would essentially mean that approval of phase 2 of the development\, which covers the redevelopment of the site and the construction of a massive hotel\, would be a foregone conclusion\, rendering the planning process futile and nothing short of farcical. \n The PA has recently granted permission to another massive development right next to the proposed site. It would therefore be sheer and utter madness to allow another large-scale project to go ahead in the same area. Xlendi has already been considerably mutilated by overdevelopment; allowing more development to go ahead will permanently destroy the little that is left of its original character and aesthetic.

SUMMARY:Protesta Kontra l-Ħakma tal-Iżviluppaturi
DESCRIPTION:Following the death of Miriam Pace in a tragedy caused by yet another act of carelessness by the development lobby\, Moviment Graffitti is calling for a non-partisan protest against the unsustainable situation in which our country finds itself. Residents and citizens are held hostage by a group of developers who consider themselves above the law and have total control over politics\, its players\, and the authorities that should be administering it. \nThe construction lobby is continuously interfering in reforms in this sector and insists that its profits\, not decency\, are the most important value. The lack of enforcement in the sector\, inadequate laws\, a complete laissez-faire in planning\, the lack of safety in construction sites\, and the arrogant bullying attitude of this lobby are the result of years and years of donations and pressure on the world of politics. \nThis latest fatality is the direct result of this situation. Together with this\, the legal notice drafted by Robert Musumeci after a spate of similar incidents last summer is the product of incompetence and servility towards the construction lobby. As we have repeated many times\, accidents like this were going to continue because this “reform” did not tackle\, in any manner\, the structural problems within the system. \nBesides a justified expression of anger on part of the public\, during this protest we will be asking for a serious and decent approach in the construction industry. We are presenting proposals for a reform that will relieve residents of their financial and logistical burdens\, that will give workers their rights and safety\, that will introduce the licensing of contractors and developers\, as well as the introduction of a points and blacklisting system. DESCRIPTION:BALLUTA BAY UNDER THREAT – PLANNING COMMISSION MEETING \nThe decision on the application for Fortina’s private ferry in Balluta Bay will be taken on Monday 3rd February at 9:30am\, during a Planning Commission meeting at the PA Boardroom. The public is encouraged to attend this meeting in order to voice its opposition to this project. \nShould permission be granted for this jetty\, Balluta Bay would be transformed into a berthing place for Fortina’s private ferry. Basically\, Balluta Bay would suffer the same fate as the Ferries in Sliema\, where this same company took over the largest part of the shore for its private ferries. \nIf approved\, it would: \n\nDeny the residents of Sliema and St. Julian’s\, all Maltese and Gozitans and also tourists\, the enjoyment of one of Malta’s most important beaches. A jetty for a private ferry in such a small beach will inevitably mean constant hazards for bathers and sea pollution.\nContinue the takeover of public spaces for private interests. Fortina’s jetty has no public benefit – it is NOT an alternative means of transport. SUMMARY:PA Meeting on the Central Link Project
DESCRIPTION:It is in the interest of all residents of Attard to attend this meeting. This project shall neither reduce traffic nor pollution\, but actually increase it due to induced demand\, a phenomenon that has been stated and accepted by Transport Malta itself. This project shall destroy over 48\,000 metres squared of agriculture land (the size of 6 football grounds)\, ruin a number of full time farmers and destroying over almost 600 trees and a good number of them protected. It will also destroy a cluster of buildings that are thought to be the oldest part of the Attard\, something that has been pointed out by ERA. \nThe application shall be discussed and decided by the Planning Board at the meeting to be held on 18 July 2019. The sitting will be held from 10:00 hours onwards\, at the Planning Authority Boardroom\, St Francis Ravelin\, Floriana. \nWhoever is interested to be present is required to register his/her interest by contacting the Planning Board Secretariat on 2290 2020. \nSuitable attire for a public board meeting is requested. DESCRIPTION:Following the serious building collapses that have happened around the island as a result of construction works\, Moviment Graffitti is organising a protest in front of the MDA offices this Tuesday\, 18th June. Indeed\, it has not even been established whether a tunnel will actually facilitate mobility between the two islands. \nThe organisations will state that a decision on whether a tunnel is the best solution to mobility challenges should only be taken after independent\, serious and holistic studies have been conducted. DESCRIPTION:On Monday 4th February at 2pm\, the Parliamentary Standing Committee responsible for the Environment and Development Planning will discuss the proposed Corinthia deal. \nThe public is encouraged to attend this meeting. Please bring your ID Card with you as it is needed to access Parliament building. \nThis discussion is being held following a request by a large number of NGOs\, residents’ groups and three Local Councils for an urgent meeting of the Committee to discuss the imminent concession of title\, land and environmental rights to the Corinthia Group (IHI). They had stated that this concession will have repercussions on all stakeholders\, the public and the natural environment\, and that these repercussions will be direct and will contribute to their quality of life. \nMoreover\, they stated that the public has a right to know whether the necessary studies for such a massive development have been conducted and concluded. We will meet at 6pm in the small square in Pietru D’Armenia Street at 6:00pm\, and from there\, we will walk together to the ITS site.Pembroke\, Swieqi and St. Julian’s are threatened by a proposed development on the ITS site that would effectively bury people alive under the long shadows cast by a gigantic 37-storey tower and a 19-storey resort hotel\, unlimited commercialisation\, endless traffic\, and hazardous dust. The objection period has started and the public has until Friday 25th May to formally object to this project with the Planning Authority (PA). SUMMARY:(Re)claiming Public Spaces. Queer-Feminist Interventions
DESCRIPTION:Closing our program of activities connected to International Women’s Day is the workshop & talk titled:  \n(Re)claiming public spaces. SUMMARY:Public Meeting - Impact of Proposed Towers to Replace ITS
DESCRIPTION:Residents and NGOs are organising a Public Meeting to present and discuss the proposed project on the ITS site in Pembroke. An application has been filed for a 37-floor tower and a 17-floor hotel to replace the ITS building. Several other high-rise projects have also been proposed in the same area. \n\nWhat will the impact of this project be on ALL the residents of Pembroke\, St. Julian’s\, Swieqi\, and other areas?\nCan we do something about it?\n\nDuring the public meeting\, the main features of the ITS project and their potential impact on residents and the environment will be presented. The way forward will then be discussed. \nThis meeting is strictly a non-partisan event.
