SUMMARY:Thrift for Solidarity - Fundraiser for Syrian LGBTIQ+
DESCRIPTION: MGRM\, YMCA Malta\, Moviment Graffitti and friends will be thrifting to fundraise for our LGBTQI+ siblings in Syria. \n While for a lot of Maltese\, the earthquake was a news item that we heard of earlier this year\, people are still suffering from the after effects\, causing an indescribable trauma to a magnitude of which we can’t possibly understand. \n While there has been amazing international support we know that international aid does not reach everyone equally\, because society doesn’t deem everyone equal. The politicians that oppress the LGBTQI+ community in. Syria are the same that have responded inadequately to the worst natural disaster to ever hit the region. \n Taxes raised for earthquake disaster relief are being misspent and the lack of disaster relief preparedness has cost too many lives. \n Having already done one for a Turkish organisation last March\, we were also meant to fund for a Syrian organisation\, however\, for reasons mentioned above\, this required a bit more research and logistics\, to ensure that the funds will ultimately reach the community. \n We will be raising funds for SGSE/SEEN\, who you can see more about here: https://www.instagram.com/sgse.syria/ \n This will be done thanks to our community members who will return to host stalls with clothes\, books\, art and more for you to thrift away at. \n Everyone is welcome. \n Later on\, we will push the tables and dance our pent up frustrations away! \n Massive thanks to Maori bar for offering to host us.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of creativity as part of our events around this year’s Women’s Day. \nYou can bring an old tote bag and transform it into a feminist one with fabric markers and paints\, or even stick/sew a piece of material on top of unwanted adverts/words on your tote bag. Francesca Zammit from YPB will bring her sewing machine to help us out with creativity. You may also bring an old T-shirt/other fabric and we will transform them into a tote bag during the workshop. \nWe will also have some ready-made tote bags waiting to be transformed into creative and colourful pieces of feminist art. \nThe workshop will last about 2 hours. SUMMARY:Screening of 'Land and Freedom' in occasion of Dia de la II República
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the screening of Land and Freedom (Tierra y Libertad) on the occasion of the Spanish Dia of II República. \nLand and Freedom is a 1995 film directed by Ken Loach and written by Jim Allen. It narrates the story of a British communist unemployed worker who decides to join the Republicans during the Spanish Civil War. The Republicans were a coalition of democratic parties and ideologies including communists\, socialists and anarchists\, against a fascist coup d’état of Spanish militaries supported by Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. \nEl Dia de la II República\, Day of the Second Spanish Republic\, takes place yearly on the 14th of April. On that day in 1931\, following democratic elections and the abdication and exile of King Alphonso XIII\, the Second Republic was declared. \nIt was a democratic period with various progressive and conservative governments that achieved significant advancements such as granting women the right to vote\, implementing major educational initiatives\, supporting cultural and scientific endeavours\, challenging the privileges of the Church\, and promoting a plurinational state among others. This period was suddenly interrupted by a coup d’état in 1936\, which initiated a three-year civil war leaving more than 500.000 people dead and resulting in a fascist dictatorship that lasted 38 years. \nEntrance is free\, and drinks and nibbles will be available.

This is the day when we celebrate gender and sexual diversity together. \nIt is also the day when we remember that although in an increasing number of countries\, the LGBTIQ+ community is enjoying more rights\, millions in different parts of the world\, still experience discrimination\, stigma\, violence and abuse\, imprisonment\, and even death. \nThis year we will be celebrating IDAHOBIT in a different way. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of ‘Io Capitano’\, followed by drinks and a brief discussion! \nThe 2023 film portrays the journey of Seydou and Moussa\, two young boys from Dakar trying to reach Europe. \nThis movie will be shown a day before the Global Day of CommemorAction for the Dead\, Missing and Forcefully Disappeared at Sea and at the Borders. The Mediterranean Sea in particular remains one of the deadliest border spaces in the world. More than 2\,200 people died in the Sea in 2024\, resulting from many human rights violations by Maltese and other governments. \nAfter the screening\, we will have a brief discussion on the film and Baħar Ċimiterju\, followed by some drinks and nibbles. \nEntrance is free\, and you are welcome to bring your own snacks or purchase drinks from the bar! \nSee you there!

DESCRIPTION:Join us for another screening leading up to International Women’s Day on the 8th of March. \n‘Sisters’ is a 2023 documentary directed by Marianna Fumai. It explores the challenges that people in Malta\, Italy\, and Poland face when trying to access abortions. The documentary also highlights the solidarity shown by national and international groups\, who work together to ensure self-determination and access to reproductive rights. \nMarianna Fumai is an author\, film editor\, and director. She is also an educator\, an intersectional feminist\, and a reproductive rights activist. She visited Malta in 2019 to meet with abortion rights activists and to witness the first Safe Abortion Day Rally. \nAfter the screening\, the director will be online with us for some questions about the documentary. We will also have a broader discussion about the local struggle for reproductive justice. \nFree entrance. Nibbles and drinks will be available. \nPlease note: the location has stairs.

DESCRIPTION:All lesbians\, sapphics\, and allies are invited to join us on Friday 25th April at 18:00 for a Zine-making workshop in honour of Lesbian Visibility Day\, which is typically held on the 26th. Lesbian Visibility Day is dedicated to the awareness of lesbians\, their issues\, and their importance in queer history. \nTo commemorate this day\, this year we will be holding a zine workshop to pay tribute to the riot grrrl culture and its connection to lesbians. We will meet at 67\, Strait Street\, Valletta at 18:00. \nThis event will be facilitated by Lana and Elio\, who will give a short presentation about riot grrrl & queer history and a demonstration on making your own zines accompanied by queer music and good vibes. \nWe will be providing some magazines\, markers\, lino stamps\, glue\, crafts knives and papers\, but each are encouraged to bring their own supplies as we may be limited. \ne will provide some snacks to share but feel free to bring your own. This will be a free event\, but a small donation would be appreciated.
