We’ll have all sorts of music to keep you moving — from Miriana Conte\, Chappell Roan\, Janelle Monáe\, Queen\, and much more! \nThis year\, queer rebels will be dancing the night away at the Antenna club\, a cool place by the sea in Kalkara. This year’s edition of Queer Rebels Can Dance will have the same vibes as in previous years. Whether you are an all-night dancer\, or maybe like to sway to the music or just have a drink and enjoy the music \, you can come and join us for some good fun! \nFeel free to be yourself. SUMMARY:Placards Against Pinkwashing
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion on pinkwashing and a workshop on making placards!  \nOn Tuesday 9th September\, Moviment Graffitti is organising a queer placard making event. This activity is part of the events during Pride week and the placards can be used during the Pride March on Saturday. The activity will be held at our premises\, 67 Strait Street\, Valletta and will start at 6.30 p.m. \nThe theme of the event is pinkwashing which refers to the practice of using LGBTQ+ rights and symbols to hide or justify systems of oppression or injustice. \nThe activity will start with three short informal presentations about the three themes: The genocide in Palestine\, LGBTIQ+ Migrants\, and Business Corporations. There will be some time for questions\, clarifications and discussion. The second part will be dedicated to making the placards on the three themes. We will provide the materials for the placards. \nThe aim of this event is to challenge the use of LGBTQ+ struggles as a branding tool for states and businesses that continue to perpetuate exploitation and oppression. Through the messages on the placards we make\, we want to denounce pinkwashing\, and to express genuine solidarity with Palestinians\, migrants\, and all oppressed communities beyond rainbow capitalism. \nPlease join us for this fun and informative event and bring your friends along! \nBackground: Israel has long promoted itself as a queer-friendly state to obscure its ongoing genocide and occupation of Palestinians as well as the harassment and bullying of Palestinian members of the LGBTIQ+ community. Similarly\, multinational corporations use Pride symbolism to present themselves as queer friendly while continuing to profit from unethical practices\, the exploitation of workers and policies which do not benefit members of the LGBTIQ+ community. In Malta\, pinkwashing also intersects with the realities of migration: queer and trans migrants are often celebrated as symbols of diversity\, yet in practice\, many face detention\, racism\, and repatriation policies.

The March will start at around 5.00 pm. \nBefore the March\, Moviment Graffitti will once again be opening its premises to provide a safe space for anyone who would like to come and have a drink with us and prepare for the March. \nThose who would like to come and dress for the Pride\, do their makeup\, make placards (we have the materials)\, or meet others are welcome to come to our premises at 67 Strait Street\, Valletta. \nJust be yourself. No judgement. Just Pride! \nThe premises will be open between 2.00 pm and 4.30 pm. \nWe would love to meet you there! Come and bring others with you. \nPlease note that unfortunately our premises are located in an old Valletta building with steep steps. Therefore the space is not accessible for persons with serious mobility issues. We regret the inconvenience. \nNote: The guest list for this event is not visible.

DESCRIPTION:Join us Thursday 6th November for the Film Screening: Women Talking \nThe 2022 film\, directed by Sarah Polley\, is a powerful adaptation of Miriam Toews’ novel inspired by true events. It tells the story of a group of women in an isolated religious colony as they grapple with the aftermath of sexual violence\, and come together to decide their future\, their faith\, and their freedom. \nWomen Talking is a moving reflection on gender-based violence\, solidarity\, and the collective courage it takes to resist oppression – themes that remain painfully relevant today. \nThis screening forms part of the lead-up to the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on 25th November\, a global day of action and awareness. \nThe screening will be followed by an open discussion\, and entrance is free. \nThursday 6th November at 6:30pm\, at Moviment Graffitti premises (67 Strait Street\, Valletta) \nAccessibility: Please note that the venue has stairs.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: The Teacher Who Promised the Sea
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the screening of The Teacher Who Promised the Sea\, to remember the Second Spanish Republic. \nThe Teacher Who Promised the Sea (Spanish: El maestro que prometió el mar) is a 2023 Spanish historical drama film directed by Patricia Font. It tells the story of Catalan teacher Antoni Benaiges\, who in 1935 is sent to a small village in the province of Burgos\, where he introduces an innovative and inspiring teaching method. Antoni is a man who supports the revolutionary changes that the Second Republic was trying to implement in society. \nThe film also follows a present-day story: Ariadna\, who seeks to find out what happened to her great-grandfather\, who disappeared during the war. \nEl Día de la II República (Day of the Second Spanish Republic) takes place every year on the 14th of April. On that day in 1931\, following democratic elections and the abdication and exile of King Alfonso XIII\, the Second Republic was declared. \nIt was a democratic period. In just a few years\, significant social and economic changes were implemented\, such as granting women the right to vote\, improving the education system\, supporting cultural and scientific endeavours\, challenging the privileges of the Church\, and promoting a plurinational state\, among others. This period was abruptly interrupted by a coup d’état in 1936\, which triggered a three-year civil war\, leaving more than 500\,000 people dead and resulting in a fascist dictatorship that lasted 38 years. \nBefore the screening\, Kor ReSister and AMU (Antifascist Musical Union) will sing a few songs related to the Spanish Second Republic. \nFree entrance. But\, as Chumbawamba sing\, “we’ll never rest again\, until every fascist dies!” \nThere is renewed hope in Italy after the younger generation stood together to vote no in the last referendum\, defending democracy\, justice\, and the antifascist constitution. \nSing along with us\, stay for our antifascist bingo and dinner! \nBingo and music are free. Din id-darba Omar N’Shea se joħodna lura fil-passat bir-rakkonti tiegħu u kwirżitajiet oħra dwar imkejjen ewlenin marbutin mal-komunità LGBTIQ+ madwar il-Belt u l-Furjana. \nSe niltaqgħu fil-6.00 ta’ filgħaxija taħt l-ajkla\, faċċata tal-Phoenicia fejn jieqfu l-karozzi tal-linja. Taħt l-ajkla kien wieħed mill-ispazji fejn kien isir il-ħufar fil-passat u fejn speċjalment l-irġiel gay kienu spiss jiltaqgħu. \nDin il-mixja se ssir biex infakkru l-Jum Internazzjonali kontra l-Omofobija\, l-Bifobija u t-Transfobija (IDAHOBIT)\, fi kliem ieħor huwa l-jum fejn niftakru f’kemm hawn persuni li jsofru mibgħeda\, diskriminazzjoni\, preġudizzji u inġustizzji minħabba li ma jikkonformawx mal-aspettattivi soċjali u kulturali tal-ġeneru u s-sesswalità. \nIl-Moviment Graffitti dejjem jimmarka dan il-jum u jagħtih l-importanza li tixraqlu għax nemmnu li kull persuna għandha dritt tesprimi u tgħix il-ġeneru u s-sesswalità tagħha kif tixtieq hi mingħajr persekuzzjoni\, mibgħeda u diskriminazzjoni. Madwar id-dinja għad hawn ħafna membri tal-komunità LGBTIQ+ li mhux biss mhumiex aċċettati u jkollhom jinħbew u jgħixu fil-biża’ imma li jiġu ppersegwitati\, mitfugħin il-ħabs\, ittorturati u maqtulin. DESCRIPTION:Join us at FemiFest: Picnic Edition for an afternoon of sisterhood in the sun! Get your creative juices flowing or just relax while you soak in the rays – either way\, there’s a spot on our blankets waiting for you. \nMeet us at Ta’ Qali in the green area across the road from Big Mat; if you’re arriving by bus\, stop at ‘Hgieg’. We’ll post the coordinates of our exact location on the day. \nSchedule: \n3:30 – 4:30 PM: Creative Writing Workshop in English – bring something to write with and on. \n5:00 – 5:30 PM: Open Mic (share your workshop creations or bring a piece from home!) \n6:00 PM onwards: Feminist games and classic fun to bring out our inner children\, followed by snacks\, and sunset socialising. \nWhat to bring: Something comfortable to sit on\, writing materials for the workshop and any snacks & drinks you might want to share with the group. \nThis is a dedicated safe space only for women\, non-binary\, and trans people. To ensure everyone feels comfortable\, we maintain the right to ask anyone to leave if their behavior impacts the safety of the group.
